How do I know when my septic tank needs pumping?

There are a few tell-tail signs your septic tank is full and requires pumping. Pooling water in the drain field, backflow issues, foul odours—backed up or leaking septic liquid will make its presence known. If your lawn is looking especially green and lush in one particular area, this is also a sign you need to have your tank pumped. The best practice is not to wait for these signs, but to instead have you tank pumped once every 1 to 3 years.
What are my responsibilities as a septic tank owner?

Because septic tanks aren’t connected to the sewer, it is your job to ensure the water and waste from your home is draining properly. You should also stay up to date with septic pumping, maintenance and general checks. This will go a long way to ensuring your system functions smoothly and that no waste is leaking into the drain field. Should I check my septic system myself?
